When one thinks Atenas, one thinks climate; according to National Geographic, this charming little town is famous for having the best climate of the world! Whether this is the truth remains to be seen, however the climate there is really extraordinary, always warm without being too hot with always the right amount of rain to keep it lush.

Located just 21 kms away from the city of Alajuela, Atenas is located close to Grecia, Palmares and San Ramon, on the road to the south and central Pacific Coast. In older days, the road was used by the old ox cart bringing the coffee and the sugar cane to the capital.

Atenas is a peaceful, quite and relaxing town; people often end up staying there simply because one does feel well and stress free in Atenas. It has a nice selection of small hotels, like the Cafetal Inn. Reasonably priced, this elegant Bed and Breakfast has a spectacular location within the coffee plantations, a pool,   and a view over the valley of the Colorado River and the volcanoes, and is close to fabulous water falls. It is also one of the best restaurants in town. The Vista Atenas is another option, with its daily tours to the volcanoes and coffee plantations; this Bed and Breakfast offers excellent services and comfortable rooms.

For a more exclusive and luxurious option, the Orchid Tree is a delight you should not deny to yourself, with its living, dining and bars areas decorated in the Balinese style, surrounded by nature and tropical gardens, this is truly one of the most elegant spots of the country. Close to nature, do not be surprised to see a sloth watching you as you enjoy your first coffee of the day.  The famous bar La Esquina Caliente, the Hot Corner, is the favourite spot for those in need of a cold beer in a lively atomosphere, and is frequented by the locals as well as by the tourists. Kay´s Gringos Postres is where to go for homemade burgers, chillies and tasty deserts, and the Rancho Trinilla is where you may enjoy a typical meal. For a quick and tasty pizza, try Ricks Internet café where they offer more than just computers.

The people of Atenas are friendly and are proud to of their clean and picturesque little town. Flowers are everywhere, the house are brightly colored and is has an irresistible atmosphere that is hard to resist. This welcoming style seems to have always been the way in Atenas and a surprisingly large amount of tourists now choose it as their base, instead of staying in the chaotic San Jose. As a consequence it is slowly becoming a place of interest for realtors and investors alike, while the prices are still very accessible.
