Properties for sale or rent in Grecia, Alajuela

Grecia is a little town of the province of Alajuela in Costa Rica located about 20kms north of the city of Alajuela. It has a pleasant warm climate, with a friendly population and the reputation of being one of the cleanest towns of the country. Surrounded by hills and lush green landscape, it enjoys an excellent cool climate all year around and is well worth a visit if you happen to be in the area.  Just follow the road signs once you are on the road to Puntarenas, you will see a turn off about 15 minutes past the airport.

As for real estate in Grecia, several gated communities are being developed, though most people in the area prefer to live in neighborhoods. There don’t seem to be a great deal of turn-key properties appropriate for foreigners, presenting an opportunity for either building and selling or building and living.

Originally a sugar cane, organic coffee and pineapple town, tourism is now growing; this charming pueblo has quite a lot of curiosities and interest for a town of its size. Maybe the most famous attraction is its famous metal church; constructed in the 1890s it is made out of plates of metal imported from Belgium. The Cathedral de la Mercedes, of gothic style, is surprisingly beautiful and elegant with its ochre colored facades and tall spires.

One other interest of Grecia is the famous and quite extensive Serpentarium ¨World of Snakes¨. No less than 50 species of snakes can be observed, from all over the world, as well as frogs and other types of reptiles and amphibians. The museum of very well laid out and it is possible to watch them in their natural habitat. The town is also known for the local population artisans that create and manufacture oxcarts, rocking chairs and other popular souvenirs that are unique to Costa Rica.

Grecia is located close the Central Volcanic Cordillera Conservation Area of Alajuela, that is southwest of the Poas Volcano. This area is almost entirely covered by forest and is vital for the protection of the drainage basins that supply all the water for the agriculture, the fish farms and the urban use of the Central Valley. It also holds the 40 hectares ¨Bosque de los Ninos¨, a plantation of trees exclusively developed by children. This reserve is recognized in playing a major role for the protection the environment as well as teaching the children to care about it. If you have time, make a detour to the ¨Cataratas Los Chorros¨, in Tucares de Grecia; they are beautiful waterfalls and make an excellent day trip.

Finally, if you like to pamper yourself, there is no better place than the Hidroterapia Grecia, only 4kms from the center of town on the Carmona road. This old practice, older than a thousand years, can be enjoyed within beautiful installations surrounded by a splendid landscape. The covered pool has warm purified water, and the service is available for all ages, from small infants to older adults. Massages and other treatments are also available.

Grecia has a nice selection of hotels, try the Posada Mimosa Country Bed and Breakfast; it has an incredible panoramic pool, tropical gardens where 52 species of birds can be admired, and organized tours.

Another nice option is the Terraza Guest house, this offers fully equipped small arpartments surrounded by lush vegetation and tropical gardens, and has been recognized as the best kept secret of the country!
Bars are plentiful in Grecia, and one only has to stroll along the streets for this refreshing beer, at the end of a long sunny day.
