Playa Avellanas is yet another beautiful and secluded beach in Guanacaste! Located on the Gold Coast of Guanacaste, south of Tamarindo and Junquillal, it is a paradise for surfers and beach bums alike.  Avellanas is not a pueblo; there are no shops, just a couple of hotels and restaurants, the beach, the sand and the sea. The wilderness is mesmerizing and a feeling of peace and well being makes you want to stay forever. The beach is lined with trees that provide some shade against the strong midday sun. Further back, there are mangroves and then pasture land.

A particularity of this beach, apart from the fact that it is one of the most beautiful of Guanacaste, is that it has rocky parts with warm tide pools with other long stretches of divine white sands and turquoise water.
For the avid surfers, Avellanas, nicknamed Little Hawaii, is without a doubt one of their favorite destinations. With swells coming in both from the Southern and the Northern Hemisphere all year round and blue skies and steady offshore winds from December to April it offers tip top conditions; surfers go there from all over the world, indeed the breaks can be quite crowded in the high season, during Easter week and in Christmas-New Year.

The rest of the time, however, it remains quite calm and relaxing.
When you go to Avellanas you will also hear about Lola, the 400kg Pig that used to go swimming in the sea creating havoc amongst the swimmers and surfers. It gave its name to a famous Beach Lounge, Lola’s Bar. With its elegant furniture facing the blue ocean, an excellent location for the flamboyant sunsets each and every night, and its tasty pizzas and snacks, Lola is the perfect place to end a perfect day.

If you are staying there for a while and fancy a bit of night life, Tamarindo is only a few minutes away; there you will find an incredible choice of bars, restaurants, lounges and clubs, to please every tastes and budgets. Boutiques, souvenir shops and spas are plentiful.

The Ostional Wildlife Refuge on the South and Las Baulas National Parks, two of the most important nesting sites of sea turtles of the world, are also only a short distance away.
Avellana is the ideal combination of nature, sun sea and surf, ecology and fun and relaxation. It is one of the star destinations of Costa Rica for sea and nature lovers.
