Playa Junquillal is the perfect beach if you want to escape far away from the crowds and prefer a quiet and lesser known destination. It is conveniently located just a few minutes away from Tamarindo, on the Northern Pacific Coast in the wonderful province of Guanacaste, the number one destination of Costa Rica. Tamarindo has its own little airstrip, however it is only 30 minutes away from the Danile Oduber International Airport in Liberia.

This three kilometers long wild beach is wonderful for long walks on the shore, with its serene and quiet environment. Its beautiful sand and fierce ocean put you in in touch with the elements like nowhere else! Indeed the ocean can be very strong there and caution must be applied when swimming! There are fierce waves and powerful currents, but it also has some very good surfing spots. If you like a bit of action, you have diving, deep sea fishing, snorkeling and horseback riding.

Because it is so pristine with very few people living there, it is very different from many other beaches of the Gold Coast; it is often deserted, however it does have a few very good hotels and restaurants. Some people love the fact that it is still today the province’s best kept secret. Some travelers set up camp on some remote part of the beach and sleep under the star, so quiet and safe it feels! You do however get disturbed by monkeys, turtles, iguanas and a myriads of tropical birds that inhabit this region.

Playa Junquillal is also very close to some other marvelous beaches: Playa Avellanas, Playa Negra, Playa Langosta and Playa Grande that is home of the National Park Las Baulas where the giant Leartherback Turtles come to nest. It is also only a few minutes away from Playa Conchal, very much loved for its lovely beach made out of broken little shells, giving it a brilliant white look! Just behind Junquillal, you have the tropical dry forest with its exotic flora and fauna.

Finally, Playa Junquillal is very proud to have earned the Ecological Blue Flag, an award given to beaches and towns that are ecologically friendly and that practice Eco-tourism successfully. To earn the flag, the beach must have water that is satisfactorily clean and of excellent quality, with a good clean beach access, and the sand free of garbage of any kind. It will have educational panels regarding the environment, signs and it will be secure.
