If a good deserted surfing beach is what you are after, then come to Tivives. You will find this isolated beach on the southern part of the town of Puntarenas, just over an hour away from San Jose. Like its big neighbour, Tivives offers lots of recreation for those who enjoy fishing, boat trips in the numerous swamp channels, and of course, fantastic surfing!

The 2.5 km long brown sanded beach of Tivives is great for walking, running, horse-riding, while the huge waves are popular amongst the best surfers of the country. Its terrific beach breaks means lengthy waves that break close to the shore. These are especially good in high tide, and the strong currents provide lots of fun and emotion. The mouth of the river is famous for its huge left, and almost perfect left tubular waves.

Yet a little caution is advised, for swimmers as well as for surfers, because crocodiles are around! Lately Costa Rica has seen crocodiles taking short cuts and using the sea to move from one river to another! This has provoked many heart beats, out of fear or excitement, most likely from both!
