The small village of Cocles, on the Caribbean coast of Puerto Viejo, is a true little hidden gem. It is hidden within the wild and exuberant tropical jungle, untold riches and beauties of lush vegetation and and gorgeous blue sea, wrapped up in a relaxed and laid back caribbean atmosphere.

There is not much to the village itself, if indeed it can be called one, just a couple of shops, a small school and the inevitable soccer field. The beaches of the caribbean coast of Costa Rica are strikingly beautiful, out of a dream and exceed anyone’s expectations of what is a tropical beach should be. The area is a fusion of Latin, Afro-Caribbean and Bribri cultures that give it is unique feel,  life style and traditions.

Surfing is good also in the area thanks to the famous Beach Break, closer to the actual village of Puerto Viejo. Cocles itself has world class Coral reefs that forms little rock pools on the shore where adults and children alike can soak in for hours; they give way to tunnels where it is possible to snorkel or dive between walls of corals and the marine life is impressive; Parrot fish, small sharks, small turtles, hipocampus, small brightly colored fish of all kinds, and more.
The people of the area are friendly and the atmosphere is simple and happy. The caribbean food is of course to die for; don’t leave without having tried Jerked Chicken and Coconut Rice and Beans, just to name a few!

The blacks of the Costa Rican Caribbean originally came from Jamaica, while the land was then mostly populated by the indigenous Bribri, and they have brought their music, food and life style to this little part of the world. Today, lots of European have made the region their home; they came, once upon a time, on holiday, and could never leave this extraordinary paradise.
Cocles, being so small, is ideal for those who want a little hideout surrounded by incredible vegetation and awesome white sand pristine and untouched beaches. The highlightof the place is the football game (soccer) played every Sunday morning.

Cocles is a dream come true, a place too good to ever leave, where you find the tranquility and peace, yet it is no more than 10 minutes away from Puerto Viejo where the night life is certainly a lot more lively with its amazing choice of souvenir shops, restaurants, bars and even small discos on the beach.
