A.TOURISM is still the number one business in Costa Rica – it is important to understand that more and more people around the world want to have an experience – not just a vacation – Ecotourism is a form of tourism involving visiting fragile, pristine, and relatively undisturbed natural areas, intended as a low-impact and often small scale alternative to standard commercial (mass) tourism. Its purpose may be to educate the traveler, to provide funds for ecological conservation, to directly benefit the economic development and political empowerment of local communities, or to foster respect for different cultures and for human rights. Since the 1980s ecotourism has been considered a critical endeavor by environmentalists, so that future generations may experience destinations relatively untouched by human intervention.[1] Several university programs use this description as the working definition of ecotourism.[2]
Generally, ecotourism deals with living parts of the natural environments. Ecotourism focuses on socially responsible travel, personal growth, and environmental sustainability. Ecotourism typically involves travel to destinations where flora, fauna, and cultural heritage are the primary attractions. Ecotourism is intended to offer tourists insight into the impact of human beings on the environment, and to foster a greater appreciation of our natural habitats.
Responsible ecotourism programs include those that minimize the negative aspects of conventional tourism on the environment and enhance the cultural integrity of local people. Therefore, in addition to evaluating environmental and cultural factors, an integral part of ecotourism is the promotion of recycling, energy efficiency, water conservation, and creation of economic opportunities for local communities. For these reasons, ecotourism often appeals to advocates of environmental and social responsibility.
B.NATURE Conservation is an ethic of resource use, allocation, and protection. Its primary focus is upon maintaining the health of the natural world, its fisheries, habitats, and biological diversity. Secondary focus is on materials conservation, including non-renewable resources such as metals, minerals and fossil fuels, and energy conservation, which is important to protect the natural world. Those who follow the conservation ethic and, especially, those who advocate or work toward conservation goals are termed conservationists.
C.A carbon credit is a generic term for any tradable certificate or permit representing the right to emit one tonne of carbon dioxide or the mass of another greenhouse gas with a carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) equivalent to one tonne of carbon dioxide.
Carbon credits and carbon markets are a component of national and international attempts to mitigate the growth in concentrations of greenhouse gases (GHGs). One carbon credit is equal to one tonne of carbon dioxide, or in some markets, carbon dioxide equivalent gases. Carbon trading is an application of an emissions trading approach. Greenhouse gas emissions are capped and then markets are used to allocate the emissions among the group of regulated sources.
The goal is to allow market mechanisms to drive industrial and commercial processes in the direction of low emissions or less carbon intensive approaches than those used when there is no cost to emitting carbon dioxide and other GHGs into the atmosphere. Since GHG mitigation projects generate credits, this approach can be used to finance carbon reduction schemes between trading partners and around the world.
There are also many companies that sell carbon credits to commercial and individual customers who are interested in lowering their carbon footprint on a voluntary basis. These carbon off-setters purchase the credits from an investment fund or a carbon development company that has aggregated the credits from individual projects. Buyers and sellers can also use an exchange platform to trade, which is like a stock exchange for carbon credits. The quality of the credits is based in part on the validation process and sophistication of the fund or development company that acted as the sponsor to the carbon project. This is reflected in their price; voluntary units typically have less value than the units sold through the rigorously validated Clean Development Mechanism

D.ALL OF THE ABOVE – What a wonderful project this could be if you could effectively combine all of the above ideas into one beautiful project package.
In a study done by the forestall ranger service back in 2002 it was certified that there was over $12,000,000 worth of wood and there was a study generated as to how to RESPONSIBLY harvest while preserving a healthy percentage of the growth over the years. That same study if applied today, nearly 14 years later, and using the current market value for wood, is estimated at nearly $30,000,000.
You may also be interested that there exists here in Costa Rica a NATIONAL FORESTRY FINANCING FUND (FONAFIFO) – The National Forestry Financing Fund, created by Forest Act 7575 in 1995, is the governmental institution where the REDD Secretariat is hosted and where it is leaded the process in Costa Rica. The general objective of Fonafifo is to finance small and medium producers for the handling of processes of reforestation, forestation, greenhouses and agroforestry systems, and for the recovery of deforested areas and the necessary technological changes in the use and industrialization of forest resources.
Fonafifo also has the responsibility to raise funds for financing the payment of environmental services provided by forests, forest plantations and other necessary activities to strengthen the development of the natural resources sector. These services are defined in the Forest Act.
Fonafifo has proven to be a key player in the Costa Rica Climate Change Strategy and in reversing the process of deforestation in the country, contributing to the achievement of 53.4% of coverage in 2010, compared to the 21% reached in the eighties.
